Grain Sack Footstool

I have some exciting news. I've decided to have a yard sale boutique. This weekend I received an email from someone new in town asking if there were any cute little upcycled shops. Well, believe it or not Vegas is lacking in that area, especially for how large of a community it is. In a quest to find furniture from thrift stores, I also run across some awesome home decor items that I always wish I could buy. I usually already have something similar, or can't fit it anywhere since my house is only three bedrooms. This is a great opportunity for me to do all the footwork finding the best in the city and bringing it all together for you. How convenient- a garage sale with no junk, just the good stuff. I also plan on having several dressers, armoires, and even a little outdoor furniture for your next garden party or BBQ. I'll have some other cute crafts available too.

Here is just a sample of the cute stuff you might find at my yard boutique.I found this footstool tucked away at a thrift store hidden from view. At some point in its life someone tried to paint this stool pink but failed miserably, making it look like melted ice cream down the legs. The fabric had never been replaced and it was filthy and out of date.

I knew I wanted it instantly; just the day before, I was searching Craigslist for a foot stool.I recalled seeing a vintage footstool in Target that I had coveted but had no need for at the time. Well, here is my version, painted in Graphite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, then Coco, then some dark wax. The distressing was tricky, I really wanted a very worn look but I just couldn't handle that pink showing through. I should have thought it through better and sanded the pink off first. I was just so excited to cover it up!

I recovered the top with some burlap I had around and stenciled on some words with acrylic paint. I used The Graphics Fairy blog as inspiration for my wording on the burlap.

I just love it now, it's a little tall for my chair but unless something better comes along I might have to keep it.

  1. Jenine,
That stool turned out great.I have that same one.It is a Rachel Ashwell stool that goes to a vanity set.I bought mine with the vanity at a antique shop and it was quite dirty too.I LOVE that burlap. And your painting on the stool looks much nicer too!

  2. Did you know the height of the stool is adjustable? You just need a saw and you can cut the bottom of the legs off to any height you want. I'm trying to convince mom to let me lower the high chairs that match our table.

I am in the process of recovering a stool right now and I was wondering if I should put a print on it.
Good luck with your Yard Boutique! I loved the name!!!

  8. I love your stool! You did such a great job. Your stool has a twin sister. My stool was stained cherry red and was really plain so I added some wooden appliques, some molding, painted it with milk paint and covered the seat in a brown toile. Here's the link if you would like to check it out.
