Lovin the Hutch

I finished up a really neat hutch this week. I just love the shape of this piece and it already came with wire in it. It's the little things that make me happy. I painted it in Old White/Paris Grey and finished it off with some dark wax.

This week I've felt like a chicken running around with her head cut off. My hubby has been studying for his dental board exams that he's taking today. It's a pretty big deal. I feel like he's been non-existent while studying and I'm here fending for myself. I didn't realize how much I use his help until he's not here! Isn't that always the case? He picks up all my furniture for me and handles a ton of my business. I made it through all my work (mostly), laundry, cooking, cleaning, keep up with church jobs, and then some. We all know how much work it takes to keep our own little world running smoothly and on a routine.

  2. Thank you. Lately, it feels like I've been having to repaint everything and it hasn't been very productive.

  6. My daughter/blog partner and I found a great hutch at GW and painted it with our self-made chalk paint. It took forever but the final product is great. I love the interior color you used. Good job!

  8. Jenine your hutch looks fabulous! I certainly understand how you felt too. My hubby helps me and he has been working lots of hours and he helps me get my things in to the shop. It makes it tough but somehow we do it. Good luck to your man!

  9. That is beautiful! You did a great job. I really like seeing the paris grey and the old white together like that - I'm hoping to paint a cabinet with ASCP this summer and I'm thinking I will do those two colors together - one on top of the other. Thanks for sharing :)

  10. Hi,
I'm visiting from Faded Charm all the way to admire your hutch redo. you did an amazing job.it doesn't even look the same hutch. it has so much character now. I especially love the way you used the two colors together. beautiful.
I recently bought my first tin of ASCP but must admit i was a wee bit disappointed. the wooden tray i was redoing sucked up a whole lot of paint and the original colors bleeded thru the paint despite the very many coats i had to treat it with. turned up so miserable. any advise?

    1. Oh no, I'm so sorry about your first experience. The first time I used it I felt like it was really thick and hard to use. I like to pour mine into a little bowl and mix some water in it to make it more workable. I have had some bleed through before on really old mark stained woods. I think that prepping your piece is really important. Make sure to clean it really well with a TSP cleaner or simple green solution. I've only had bleed through ever with the white colors.
Also keep in mind that if you're going to distress it you don;t always need to have a think, even coat of pant. I found at first I was always making sure every inch was covered and there were no thin spots with wood showing through. Silly because I was just going to sand down some spot anyways.
Don't be scared to paint something else, it'll work out better I promise.

    2. @ Rita: May I just add that when I have had bleed through, I will do a coat of polycrylic or polyurethane and then paint over it again with the ASCP. No bleed through after that!

    3. Hello Rita...next time you have bleed through, try applying Zinzer Clear Water Based Shellac...seals old varnish/water stains and old musty odors. The bleed through has to do with the old surface (water damage/old varnish) and not the paint. Jenine's hints are also VERY helpful.

    4. I read a post on the Painted Purple Lady's website about this problem and I plan on trying it next time I have this issue. She used spray on Shellac by Zinser Bulls Eye. Here's the link: http://www.thepurplepaintedlady.com/2012/05/what-to-do-about-water-stains-or-wood-grain-bleeding-through-paint/ Hope it helps!

  13. I wish I could find a piece like this, and what you did with it made it all that much more drool-worthy!

I can sympathize on how your feeling when the hubby can't be around to help with our stuff. Mine works a lot of hours so ya just end up being much more self-sufficient than your used to.

  18. I love this transformation! I have a hutch I want to paint, not as nice as this one - mine is a standard 1990's hutch. The backplates for the hardware are glued on, and have not budged in over 20 years. Any suggestions for removing them without damaging/cracking the wood? Thanks, and I look forward to more inspiration from you!
