I did it again. I got so excited to start a project I didn't take a before picture. I do however still have the picture from the Craigslist listing.
You may have noticed that I do a lot of these 6-9 drawer French replica-style dressers. I just find them so romantic and whimsical. I realize they're not for everyone or every room. There seems to be a high number of these old dressers in this style here in Vegas. Am I complaining? No way.
For this dresser and nightstand (it's like an extra bonus when I find them with matching nightstand), I cleaned them up using a Simple Green cleaner. Then I sanded down the top where there were some old scratches and burn marks. I wanted a clean new surface before I painted the top. The body of the dresser is painted in Old White Chalk Paint. I was asked to paint the drawers a sage green, but Annie Sloan doesn't make a sage green. I turned to my DIY chalk paint technique and mixed my Glidden brand Dusk Sage with some plaster of paris. I dont measure this out, but just mix it until it becomes a thick paste, i add a tbsp or two of water. I can then paint the details and drawers in sage without sanding and priming. I finished with several coats of clear white and a very light amount of distressing.

Looks so great! I've got a 9-drawer in my garage just waiting to be painted. I'm going to do two-tone as well but haven't decided which colors yet.
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty, I love those dressers too. How do you compare the homemade chalk paint to the Annie Sloan? Does it take the wax as well? I would love to save some money but don't want to lose quality...Mary
ReplyDeleteMary,
DeleteI definitively use the ASCP whenever I can. I feel like the homemade chalk paint shows brush strokes more and is harder to sand. I use the homemade chalk paint to get me out of a pickle when my clients want a color Annie doesn't provide. I do wax the homemade version and it seems to be no different.
so pretty! i love that green!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I have a set similar to yours that my son is using. Once he is off to college in the fall the whole set is getting a makeover! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThese are great! I love how the distressing turned out on the drawers. Colors are very pretty, they look high end!
ReplyDeleteThis style is really the only thing I enjoy painting. The curvy lines get me every time. I love your color combo. They turned out perfect!
ReplyDeleteI love the french style furniture that was American made. It is quality and I'm delighted to see it saved and given a wonderful new life.
ReplyDeleteI love the sage green! I just refinished a similar dresser and nightstands for my master bedroom. BTW, If you mix Duck Egg with Versailles, you get an awesome Sage Green color! Or Aubusson and Versailles if you want a deeper green.
ReplyDeleteThank You so much Michele! I've just been too nervous I wouldn't be able to match the color my client shows me if I mixed it myself. I will be trying this for sure!
DeleteOh so pretty...love that sage green. I also love the pulls...what did you use on them? Beautiful!

How much is the Annie Sloan paint? I have to drive 2 hours to pick up some. Is it truly worth it?
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteI pay $34.95 plus about $6 shipping per quart for it, so $41 total. I guess it's up to you whether you want to drive that far for it, but I love it. Highly recommended for sure, nothing else seems to paint on or distress quite like it. You could always get a quart shipped to you, then try it for yourself so you can decide whether it's worth it or not. Thanks for coming by and good luck!
I was just lamenting over the lack of a good green in ASCP. And the more I see of DIY chalk paint, the more I'm liking the concept. Will try. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'd love for you to link this up to my party...it's awesome.

ReplyDeletestopping by from Kammy's Korner, this set is just too pretty for words! gorgeousness!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love it! I was thrilled when I finally found one of these dressers for our master bedroom. And we had to move to Ohio before I did! I originally wanted one in our old house to use in the dining room as a buffet. Once we moved though I really needed a dresser and was so glad I found one on CL.
ReplyDeletegorgeous! i am SOOO loving the two tone!
ReplyDeleteFound you through Shabby Creek Cottage link party. Beautiful! Love the color combo! Would love to try something like this on my buffet and matching china cabinet!
